It’s time for peek of the day – one of the scripts I’m dying to try one day is…
Calendar Girls by Tim Firth
And now what you’ve probably been waiting two weeks to read…
My ideas for this show.
I am not saying this show is perfect but it’s definitely very near to perfect when it comes to female empowerment. It’s about taking control of their environment and understanding that what makes them uncomfortable is all in their head from an unforgiving society. It’s about raising women up to not only feel good about their bodies but also their personalities – to branch out into new adventures they had previously never thought of participating in before.
Why do I want to do it?
I don’t recall if I ever said this or not – but one of the biggest complaints I get from my female friends in theatre is the amount of other females auditioning for shows. It’s not that there are not enough shows in our community, including our extended community, it’s that a majority of shows have a heavy male influence.
One of my goals as a director is to have a heavy female presence on stage. Not just in ensemble. Not just in ubiquitously sexy roles. But in characters where people feel empowered being a part of and watching it from the seats. Calendar Girls is the perfect medium to do that and I look forward to one day casting and working on it – do note: this show I have about half precast, something a director SHOULD notify all potential actors auditioning for me so no one gets their feelings hurt.
